“A must-have reference for any industry stakeholder, The IHRSA Global Report shows solid growth for the health club industry worldwide,” said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of global products. “New this year, the report contains health club membership penetration rates by country showing the tremendous potential for growth in many key markets. To that end, IHRSA has launched a global initiative to reach 230 million health club members worldwide by 2030.”

The top 10 markets across the globe account for more than two out of three health club members and 71% of total industry revenue. While the U.S. leads all markets in club count and memberships at 60.9 million and 38,477, respectively, Brazil is second in club count at 34,509, and Germany is second in number of members at 10.6 million. The U.S. also leads all markets in revenue with $30 billion, while Germany is second ($5.6 billion), and the United Kingdom third ($5.5 billion).

Health club performance is also strong in the Asia-Pacific region. Based on data gathered in the IHRSA Asia-Pacific Health Club (Second Edition), 14 markets in the Asia-Pacific region attract 22.5 million members at more than 25,000 health clubs. Opportunities for growth remain in the Asia-Pacific region as member penetration rates remain low in comparison with developed health club markets worldwide.

The report is divided into four sections:

    • The "Industry Overview" section details the industry's performance in 2017, along with analysis and insights from industry experts and leading club operators.
    • The "Industry Research" section includes data on revenue, number of facilities, and number of club members for nearly 70 markets. • The "Company Profiles" section highlights more than 300 leading health club companies from around the world.
